Sikkim, a tiny state of India came into existence from 26th April 1975 with an area of 7096 sq. km. Situated in the Eastern Himalaya boast of its rich bio-diversity and high mountain ranges. Kancchendzonga the third highest peak in the world is also the guardian deity of Sikkimese people 400 species of flowering plants, 600 species of birds, 560 species of orchids, 40 species of Rhododendrons and large number of other animals are shattered in this tiny state. 

It is bounded by Nepal to the west and Bhutan to the east, by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast and by West Bengal to the south. Sikkim has divided into North, South, East and West districts.

Bagdogra is the nearest airport, which is 124 km and four hours drive from Gangtok and there on connects Kolkata, Delhi, Patna, Guwahati, Mumbai and Chennai. Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, Deccan Air, Kingfisher, Spicejet, operates in this route. Five seater helicopter service between Bagdogra and Gangtok is also available.


NJP, Bagdogra, Siliguri and Darjeeling are connected to Gangtok by all weather roads. NJP to Gangtok is 120 km, Bagdogra to Gangtok is 123 km, Siliguri to Gangtok is 114 km and Darjeeling to Gangtok is 94 km. Numerous buses and jeeps ply to Gangtok from these destinations.


Nearest railway station to Sikkim is at Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri near Siliguri. The NJP Railway Station is the hub to connect the Northeast India and mainland of the country. That is why all the major passenger trains pass through this station.
